PAMin Rönni-Sällinen: The decision taken by Finnish Commerce Federation is both arrogant and irresponsible towards workers

Annika Rönni-Sällinen, President of Service Union United PAM, finds the recent decision by the board of Finnish Commerce Federation to refuse to negotiate wages in the commerce sector arrogant and irresponsible. PAM and Finnish Commerce Federation were supposed to negotiate wage increases in the sector this fall.

In the collective agreement negotiations in February, the parties agreed that salary increases for the second year of the contract period would be negotiated by December 15, 2022. If an agreement is not reached by that date, the collective agreement can be terminated with a normal one-month notice period ending on January 31, 2023. However, the board of Finnish Commerce Federation announced today that it does not intend to negotiate with PAM about wage increases.

“I am disappointed with the decision. Until now, we at PAM have taken it for granted that the agreement is respected and that we can trust in the Finnish Commerce Federation’s word. Now the situation has changed. The Finnish Commerce Federation has taken a unilateral decision that shows arrogance towards the negotiations and thus towards the employees in the sector”, Annika Rönni-Sällinen commented on the turn of events.

The federation’s arguments for refusing to negotiate are weak. According to Rönni-Sällinen, the employers’ decision is irresponsible and weakens trust in collective bargaining as well as employees’ confidence in the future and the predictability of their earnings. She states that the negotiation situation is now viewed in a new light. In this current situation, assessing the mutual trust between the parties should not be underrated either.

“We are now assessing the negotiation situation and how the future looks like. The federation’s announcement will not change our goals. We continue to aim for fair salary increases for those working in the service sector – increases that they deserve and that will secure their purchasing power”, concludes Rönni-Sällinen.
