Often overlooked, their efforts deserve appreciation and recognition. This week marks the celebration of Global Week of Action for Hotel Housekeepers, organized by the global union IUF, which represents workers in the hospitality sector, among others. PAM is a member of the IUF. According to Mari Kettunen, PAM’s organisation expert in facility services, the goal of the week is to raise global awareness about the importance and challenges of the profession. – Many people might have misconceptions about what cleaning work entails and how crucial it is for hygiene, safety, and comfort. Without their contribution, many everyday services wouldn’t function as expected. That’s why their work deserves to be celebrated and respected. The work of housekeepers has a direct impact on customer experience and, consequently, on business success. Clean and carefully maintained rooms are a hallmark of popular hotels. Housekeepers and cleaners deserve fair pay and reasonable workloads for their work PAM aims to highlight several important issues during the week, including working conditions, terms of employment, and the recognition of housekeepers’ contributions. The essential nature of their work for hotel operations should also be reflected in their salaries. – Housekeeping work is often marked by low wages and demanding schedules. We want to emphasize the need for fair wages, adequate breaks, and manageable workloads for these employees, Kettunen says. Negotiations about wage increases and other working conditions for housekeepers and all cleaners will take place in early 2025. According to Kettunen, the best way to support these upcoming negotiations is to join PAM as a member and encourage colleagues to do the same. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the importance of hygiene and cleaning. The lessons from a few years ago remain relevant today. – Since the COVID-19 pandemic, hygiene has taken on a whole new level of importance. We remind everyone that housekeepers are key to ensuring health safety and should therefore be equipped with proper tools, Kettunen stresses. Recommend membership!
