The Learn as you earn (Tutustu ja tienaa) summer trainee programme is an opportunity for 14–17-year-old students to get their first experience of working life. The internship lasts for two weeks, and the salary is €425. The internship is available in sectors that have agreed on this programme: Commerce (e.g. grocery stores, department stores) Tourism, restaurant and leisure services (e.g. hotels, cafés) Pharmacies Note! The company must be a member of its sector’s employers’ association to offer this internship. When can you do the summer internship? The internship can take place between 1 June and 31 August. The working day can be up to 6 hours long and must be scheduled between 8:00 and 18:00. Work shifts are mainly on weekdays (Monday to Friday). How to apply? Find an internship place in a suitable sector. Make sure the employer is familiar with the programme and is a member of the relevant employers’ association. Fill in the sector-specific Learn as you earn employment contract form together with the employer. Start working and enjoy the experience! Important to know: You will be assigned a supervisor at the workplace to guide you in your tasks. If you fall ill during the programme, you may continue later or still receive your full salary. City or municipal summer job vouchers cannot be combined with this programme. Sector-specific information Commerce sector It must be agreed in advance who will supervise the student. The supervisor must be qualified, and special attention must be paid to occupational safety. The salary for the internship period is €425, which includes holiday compensation and all other financial benefits under the collective agreement. You can find Learn as you earn internship opportunities in member companies of the Finnish Commerce Federation. Pharmacies The trainee should get a broad understanding of the pharmacy’s operations. The supervisor must have enough time to guide the intern properly. Under the pharmacy sector collective agreement, students may be paid a so-called schoolgoer’s wage. If the student has previously worked under the Learn as you earn programme, the length of that employment will shorten the maximum period during which the schoolgoer’s wage can be paid. The salary for the internship period is €425, which includes holiday compensation and all other financial benefits under the collective agreement. Tourism and restaurant industry You can find Learn as you earn internship opportunities in member companies of the Finnish Hospitality Association MaRa. It must be agreed in advance who will supervise the student. The supervisor must be qualified, and special attention must be paid to occupational safety.
