No results in mediation of the ski centre industry labour dispute ends without result – strike will take place

Service Union United PAM and the hospitality industry employers’ association MaRa have not reached an agreement in the ski centre industry labour dispute, despite mediation efforts led by the National Conciliator. A limited strike affecting ski resorts will begin on Monday, 3 March.

– We are still too far from finding a solution with the employers. None of the many solutions we have proposed have been accepted by the employers, says contract expert Sirpa Moilanen.

Negotiations on the ski centre collective agreement have been ongoing since mid-January. PAM demands pay rises that improve employees’ purchasing power, changes that promote occupational safety and well-being at work, and maintained dismissal protection.

The National Conciliator has tried to find a solution to the dispute but without success so far. The parties remain far apart on wage increases and dismissal protection, so the National Conciliator was not able to present a settlement proposal.

Moilanen regrets that the employers have not shown a genuine willingness to find a solution.

– The fact that the strikes are going ahead also shows the employers’ strict coordination. The past seasons have been excellent for industry, and many ski centres have made big investments, so there is room for wage increases.

– Wages in the ski resort industry have been lagging for a long time. The workers have earned their wage increases, Moilanen sums up.

The two-day strike at ski centres will begin on Monday, 3 March.

The strike will affect six companies: Hiihtokeskus Iso Ylläs Oy (Ylläs, Kolari); Huippupaikat Oy (Vuokatti, Sotkamo; Tahko, Tahkovuori and Kasurila, Siilinjärvi); Oy Levi Ski Resort Ltd (Kittilä); Pyhätunturi Oy (Pyhä, Pelkosenniemi); Rukakeskus Oy (Kuusamo) and Ylläs-Ski Oy (Äkäslompolo).

The strike does not apply to emergency work or tasks where it would endanger critical functions of society or human lives.

In addition, a ban on overtime and shift changes is in effect until further notice.

The previous round of negotiations on collective agreement for ski centre employees took place in November 2024. At that time, PAM and MaRa agreed to extend the collective agreement for a fixed period of three months, with the agreement ending on 31 January 2025.
